ACPA has Announced Their Updated Committee Leadership

The American College of Physician Advisors (ACPA) is pleased to announce the updated leadership for its ObservationGovernment AffairsClinical Documentation Integrity, and Pediatric Committees.

The Observation Committee will now be chaired by Anuja Mohla, DO.  Dr. Mohla is a Senior Physician Advisor at the Christiana Care Health System in Newark, Delaware.  As a healthcare leader in utilization management, she focuses on Inpatient and Outpatient status determination based on payer regulations including those for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). She also serves as the Medical Director of Patient Access & Flow and works closely with the Director of Clinical Operations at Christiana Hospital. She has presented her work on denial and observation management at several regional and national conferences. The committee has two vice-chairs: Bartho Caponi, MD, FACP, PHM and Amit Wadhwa, MD, FAAEM.  Dr. Caponi is a Clinical Professor of Medicine as well as Medical Director for Utilization Management/Physician Advisor Program at University of Wisconsin Health in Madison, Wisconsin.  Dr. Wadhwa is the Medical Director of Observation and Utilization at Trinity Health in Maryland.

The Government Affairs Committee will continue to be chaired by Carolyn Dutton, MD, FACEP, FACP.  Dr. Dutton has worked in emergency medicine and as a hospitalist with Atrium Health since 2006. In 2016 she became the Medical Director for University City Wound Care Center.  Ritu Prasad, MD has been named vice-chair.  Dr. Prasad is the Senior Physician Advisor for MedStar Union Memorial and Good Samaritan Hospitals.  At Union Memorial she is the Vice Chief of Staff as well as Medical Director of Observation Services.  For MedStar Health she is the System Clinical Lead for Acute Case Management.

The Clinical Documentation Integrity (CDI) Committee will continue to be chaired by Erica Remer, MD, CCDS.  Dr. Remer’s career has involved clinical work as an emergency physician and as a physician advisor.  She transitioned to independent consulting in July 2016 and is passionate about documentation opportunity as well as educating coders, CDI specialists, and physicians. She has authored numerous articles on CDI, coding, and denials, and is the co-host of Talk Ten Tuesdays, a weekly national podcast.  The new vice-chair is Waldo Herrera-Novey, MD, MBA, MSC, FACP, SFHM.  Dr. Herrera-Novey is a hospitalist and physician advisor at NorthShore University in Chicago, Illinois.

The Pediatric Committee will continue to be chaired by Denise Goodman, MD, MS, FCCM.  She is a professor of pediatrics and has practiced pediatric intensive care medicine for over 25 years.  As Medical Director of Case Management and Care Coordination at the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago, she is responsible for denials management, utilization management, and physician education on a number of topics. In addition, she has led or participated in numerous special projects at the intersection of clinical care and the revenue cycle including readmission reduction, prior authorization, out-of-network processes, and length of stay management.

The ACPA thanks Dr. Bernard Ravitz for his past leadership as Chair of the Observation Committee, Dr. Brian Moore for his past leadership as Co-Chair of the Government Affairs Committee, and Dr. Timothy Brundage for his past leadership as Co-Chair of the Clinical Documentation Integrity Committee.
